April 2026 Agenda/Minutes

Minutes for the Wakulla Soil and Water District meeting held April 9, 2026, at 6pm at the Wakulla County Extension Office, 84 Cedar Avenue, Crawfordville, Fl 32327.

  • The meeting was called to order by chairman David Shepard at 6:27pm Other members present were Kellie Keys and Cal Jamison.

  • Guests :Wakulla County Extension Office and IFAS Director Clay Bania, local beekeeper Anton Hahna

  • The meeting agenda was approved unanimously. Moved by Cal, 2nd by Kellie

  • The March 12, 2026, meeting minutes were approved unanimously. Moved by Cal, 2nd by Kellie.

  • Treasurer Report: David noted the current bank statement shows a balance of $12,764.47.

  • There were no citizens to be heard:

  • Presentation of our poster contest awards in two categories at 6pm delayed the start of the regular portion of the meeting.

  • Old Business:

    • Cal gave an update on the continuing problems with the Microsoft account. The account is paid up for three years, but Microsoft had to create a new account for some reason and the old account has not been terminated. Follow up continues.

    • Cal reported that we have received another Financial Report reminder from the Department of Financial Services.

    • Cal reported that Wakulla Springs State Park management and the Friends of Wakulla Springs State Park are working to include homeschoolers in the educational programs. We might take this opportunity to be part of that effort. Cal is coordinating with some homeschooler groups, the Park and the Friends.

  • New Business:

    • Franklin 98 Living Shoreline Project is a restoration of the shoreline along US 98 in Franklin County. Cal reported that the breakwater restoration and planting of sea grasses might be one that could be implemented at Mashes Sands.

  • Supervisor Items:

    • Cal reported on several items:

      • FDEP announced that the agency has completed the LiDAR imaging for the entire coastline of Florida. In a conversation with Harley Means, State Geologist,

      • Harley emphasized the threat from pennies and other coins thrown into springs and rivers. Leaching copper and other metals is the culprit.

      • The Floria Springs Council has taken FDEP to court to contest over pumping from the aquifer.

      • The Woodville well taken offline because of PFAS levels and was restored to service after the water was mixed with water from other wells to achieve acceptable levels. Dilution is the solution.

    • Kellie reported on the goals requirement and moved that we accept the 2026 goals. 2nd by Cal. The list was revisited and discussed. Passed unanimously. Two of six goals will be discussed at upcoming meetings.

    • There was a discussion with Clay Bania about mutual goals and possible joint projects between his office and the WSWCD. He suggested that we develop a survey to see what the local community wants to know. A jointly sponsored tree identification workshop was discussed and will be further discussed at the next meeting.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:30. Moved by Cal, 2nd by Kellie. Passed unanimously.
